Anne Hastings
The Microfinance Committee is proud to present a timely discussion on the global food crisis and microfinance.
The food riots in Haiti, Bangladesh, and Egypt in April brought the world’s attention to the impact of the spike in food prices on the poor, 80% of whose income goes for food. Anne Hastings, Executive Director of Fonkoze, Haiti’s largest microfinance institution, will share with us how the increase in food prices has impacted microfinance clients in Haiti. Anne will reflect on the steps microfinance institutions can take to survive the global food crisis.
Anne Hastings has been the Director of Fonkoze—Haiti’s alternative bank for the poor—since 1996. Under her leadership, the institution has grown to a staff of more than 750 with 36 branches throughout rural Haiti. Today, it serves more than 165,000 clients with a full range of financial services. In 2004 Fonkoze formed a commercial non-bank financial institution, of which Anne is a Director, charged with developing innovative new products, monitoring the social impact of Fonkoze on its clients, and working to eliminate illiteracy and develop life skills.
Before coming to Haiti, Anne had 15 years of experience providing strategic management services to executives. She recently was honored at the United Nations with one of the 4th Annual Women Together Awards for her relentless work to alleviate poverty through microfinance in Haiti. Anne is the recipient of other awards, including the 2005 Pioneer in Microfinance Award of the Grameen Foundation.
